A Leap of Faith: At the intersection of Faith & politics

The show opened a few days before election day. The Democratic mayors of Minneapolis & St. Paul were being challenged by other Democrats. City Council seats were up for grabs. And, the war waged on in Iraq.

In God's Name: America's Holy War by Margaret Hilger

Twenty two artists responded to the call for work that spoke to the intersection of faith and politics. For most of the artists, the questions they wrestled with had more to do with the intersection of organized religion and politics. They are worried about their churches being used for political purposes, their faith being given a definition they do not agree with. Some of the work sing songs of hope and of unity; some sing songs of protest. a movie of the show, in 2 parts can be seen.

The concerns of faith, religion and poilitics are always strong. As a result, this opening was certainly the largest we have had to date. There were several hundred curious and concerned people in and out throughout the night. Read more about the show in the Minnesota Daily.

DESIRE Arrives soon

I've made the committment. DESIRE will be hung in the gallery, January 7, 2006 through February 24, 2006. The drawings are finished. The digitizing is in process as the plans evolve. You can expect a lush, sensual experience. The images are beautiful and are printing well. This erotic and sensual show is the result of a 3-4 year contemplation of aging, sexuality and invisibility. I anticipate a full scale installation, taking over the space with sight, sound and poetry.
The Gala Opening will be Saturday, January 7, from 5pm-9pm, with a beverage service from Airforce Nutrisoda again and some yummy eats.
Special Event: Saturday, February 11, an evening of HOT POETRY. The installation will be reformatted to accomodate poets and fans. This event will be curated by Lisa Berg. So, come see the images and hear the words in a new way.

DESIRE

Penetrated, caressed,stretched
Ash blood and cellulite dapple
Elegance that belies mute beginnings
Shy with the smooth skin of lust
A spring bud interrupted
A natural progression of slow lingering violence.

The scent of singed hair,
of things hoped for...
Desire massaging the skin...
Rocking and ringing a faint chime.

I look at it and breathe in deep cool air,
Far horizons, and mythic dreams.
It tells me things I can neither grasp nor understand,
Cradling an unending tale,
A meandering lost voice, a muted echo.

New Movies on-line

CALL FOR ART
-A Reader's Art 6: changing the wind

March 3, 2006-April 28, 2006
A show of artists books with a focus on change: political, personal, cultural, spiritual...What do you want to say about change? What needs to be changed? What has changed? How would you effect change?

All media welcome, all approaches, even installation and performance.Editions or one of a kind books and book objects or book referential work. I am always willing to expand the reaches of book art to the edges of the known universe and beyond.
The slides or jpg's are due January 15, 2006. For more info click here.

India in America: stories of new lives May 2006. We have the oral histories. Now we need the art. Spread the word.

Threads in Space July 2006. The specifics are still vague, but the show will travel to either Lansing or East Lansing, Michigan with my co-conspirator Lynn Hershberger. More info will follow, soon I hope. We are seeking fiber sculpture with an emphasis ( but not a limitation) on knitting and crochet.

Do look at the new books. The Panty Symphony, after may years cooking in my brain and my notebooks, finally is done. It is poems and music for random performance, sold with removeable music cards that can be played in any order and with a cd that has one potential version of the symphony.Read a review in this slow-loading article.

Two new unique books are available as well: My Daddy's T(eyes) and Poisons & Antidotes. My Daddy's T(eyes) is an original suite of poetry on the topic of aging housed in old neckties in an antique tie case.
Poisons & Antidotes is a unique collage book, a contemplation on mortality and memory.
