Sue's Musings and News
November 2004
STILL HERE...AND THERE...AND THERE
I'm at home, here in Minneapolis. It suits me. The response to the gallery has been gratifying. Openings are crowded and press support is strong.
Contractors and sub-contractors still define my life. Electric is done, landscaping is done, most weatherizing is done. Now the truly horrifying begins: plumbing!
BACK IN MICHIGAN
I made it back to Michigan in October to teach at the Black Sheep Weaver's Guild. What a wonderful group of students! They spent an intense two days chasing meaning and inviting epiphany in the Themed Collage Artists Book workshop, a class designed to help students find and develop sensible narrative in the book format. They all completed an artists book in 2 exhausting days. What fun!
I even had time to go to Okemos and see my doctor and many of the people who are most important to me! Then, back to the contractors in Minneapolis.
ALL THINGS ELECTORAL
The Gallery at Susan Hensel Design opened with delightful fanfare, packed rooms and good press on September 10, 2004. In keeping with the stressful season, it's topic was electoral politics. Artists from all over the United States sent paintings, video, assemblage, books and sculpture to ALL THINGS ELECTORAL. Images From All Things Electoral
A LEAP OF FAITH
The current show in the gallery is A LEAP OF FAITH. 22 artists from all over the United States, and one from Canada, trusted me to show their art well. It is an exciting show of faith, doubt, fear, hope from artists of all different backgrounds. The opening on November 5 was very busy. Be sure to check out the gallery page to see the show installed and see details of each artist's work.
PYRAMID ATLANTIC BOOK ARTS FAIR & CONFERENCE
It's that time again. It happens every two years in and around Washington, DC. The fair this year takes place at the NOAA Auditorium and Science Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, November 19-21. I will show with over 50 book artists, fine presses and fine press dealers on the 19th and the 20th . There are all sorts of events in addition to the fair, including speakers, panel discussions and demonstrations. Go to Book Arts Fair for complete information.
WAR GAMES to open in January
The January/February show in the gallery is WAR GAMES by Kari Gunter-Seymour of Albany, Ohio. I am so pleased that Kari has agreed to bring the show to Minneapolis. It is a powerful installation of interactive games that allow us to consider the war in Iraq in a new way. Kari's son serves in Iraq and these games are her way of dealing with the fear and anger while still providing avenues for support for the individuals who have been sent, rightly or wrongly, into harms way. "It is not my intent to distress or annoy anyone," Gunter-Seymour has said. "The goal here is to help people think more seriously about how to bring some order to the chaos that is occurring in Iraq and here at home. Then hopefully you will register to vote if you have not already."An article from the Athens News about this installation.
A few small of the show images have been posted on the gallery page.

A READER'S ART 5
It is time to be thinking about submissions to READER's ART 5. Yes, amazingly, it IS the fifth year for this show that can be seen in March and April of each year. It has moved to Minneapolis with me. This year the focus is on books that break out of the mould somewhat. The subtitle for the show is: on the wall and out of the box. I am calling for artists books that might bend the idea of book or stretch the string of narrative. Bound, unbound, sculptural, singular or editioned. Where does your notion of bookness lie today? I have already commissioned a wall book from Seamus Leonard whose work backed up and unified the ALL THINGS ELECTORAL show. He has been working on an on-going series that is inspired by comics and political cartoons entitled the COSMIC STUFF UNIVERSE, painting directly on walls. This will be another installment in the ongoin story. The call for art can be downloaded on the CALL FOR ART PAGE If you have problems downloading the pdf, contact me and I will send a text only copy to you.
