Sue's Musings and News

March 2003

This month is new project month.

Winter sees new projects percolate and some come to fruition. But, more and more, the projects have long production schedules heavy on learning new technologies.

Pack Your Bag

New to the inventory is a deck of cards, entitled Pack Your Bag
It is a lightly, wryly quirky deck. Walking through the kitchen on a high anxiety day, an empty grocery bag loomed in front of me. Startled by it's seeming black-hole emptiness that threatened to suck me and all of my kitchen into nothingness, I wondered what I would put in it before that cataclysmic event happened. So I wrote for days, at odd hours, a list of what I would do with an empty brown bag.

Desire

I'm also working on the images for a proposed book and installation entitled Desire. It is very much a work in progress. I anticipate at least a year will pass before it is complete. The images are from mixed media drawings, using nearly all the sources and materials available to me as an artist. These pieces make use of graphite, colored pencil, photography, xerography, collage and printmaking. They are layered and layered with image and contrasting surfaces. They are so rich that they command sculptural space. Click the thumbnail below to see a few images.

The Panty Symphony

The writing has started...This one will produce a book or card deck, a sound CD and if we are truly lucky, as well as driven, a piece of software that will allow you to re-create the symphony in random combinations. This is a multi-faceted project: the symbology of panties; the teachings of the I-Ching; the generation of music based on the meaning of the I-Ching and the metaphors of the panties.

Secret Writings

This will be a small installation in which milagros will form a code as they replace the keys on a typewriter. Political history and the Iran-Contra affair will likely be the foundational source.

News

A Reader's Art 3 opens at The Lansing Art Gallery, 425 S. Grand Ave., Lansing, MI 48933 on April 1, 2003, and runs through April 25. Call the gallery at 517 374-6400 for more information.

The Lansing Art Gallery was begun 38 years ago by a handful of dedicated local artists and art patrons. The Gallery became the first permanent art gallery in Lansing and is Lansing's oldest nonprofit gallery.

The Lansing Art Gallery is located inside the Center for the Arts, a downtown Lansing facility it shares with Boarshead Profesional Theater and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. Programs of the Gallery are funded by individual memberships, contributions, grants, and the sale of artwork. I am grateful that their board of directors made room in the schedule for the continuation of A Reader's Art as an annual show. An illustrious group of artists from all over the country agreed to show this year:
