Sue's Musings and News

June 2005

Politics unusual

An American flag gently waves over Matt's Bar, home of the famous Jucy Lucy, and I wonder what my government will do next and I wonder if the "wind" will change. Instead of politics as usual, I begin to hear politics unusual. I hear new language being spoken by some Democrats, language that speaks of a broader meaning of moral values that encompasses helping the poor, feeding our hungry, supporting our children, funding education and being good samaritans in the greater world. Some Republicans are broadening the definition of moral values beyond the hot button issues of gays, guns and god. I have learned that fundamentally, we all want pretty much the same things: safety, housing, food, education, healthcare for all our citizens. Where we differ is in how to "get there." It will take compromise, on all sides. But, if we can focus on our shared goals, maybe, just maybe, we can begin to move forward again, into a better world. Let's all "reach across the table," shake hands, stop the catastrophizing, and say," We agree on so much, let's see if we can work together." Meanwhile, read about "changing the wind" at sojo.net.

Transitions...again

I have been in Minneapolis a full year now. I have weathered a sweaty summer, a national election, an upper midwestern winter, a short wet spring and now back to sweaty summer weather. The big transition is that my son, John, graduated from Oberlin College on May 30, with a degree in studio art. He is a whiz at photography, web page design, real-time video application, artists slides, video editing and film making. He's more or less in Ann Arbor for now. So, if you live in the area and need his help, feel free to contact me for info.

Do not name your food!

Do not name your food! was a lot of fun. It was our shortest, craziest show so far. The room was littered with fiberglass meat and PEEPS! There were also rubber chickens, steak lunchboxes, rubber duckies, videos, soundtracks, drawings and pastels. In keeping with our discomfort with handling meat, we served fresh grilled vegetables, couscous and cookies. A grand time was had by all. See a small movies of the show.
