WAR GAMES arrives in Minneapolis

WAR GAMES: a mother's perspective, opened January 7th with the artist Kari Gunter-Seymour in attendance. Kari traveled here from southern Ohio on the day that Chicago was nearly shut down due to heavy, heavy snow. She barely made a much earlier than scheduled flight out of Columbus only to wait in Chicago an additional 6 or 7 hours until she miraculously got a flight out. Her luggage arrived nearly two days later. We were joking that we would have to take her to the local thrift store, SAVER'S, to buy an opening night dress.

The show arrived by freight in 14 boxes. Thankfully we were ably assisted by Dale Kennedy, who spent the day helping us install the show and then spent a day preparing the food for the show. Installation was slowed by telephone and in person interviews. We did not complain. The Minnesota Women's Press wrote an in depth article with lots of color photos. ( The online version has only one photo.) Then Kari was interviewed by Lydia Howell for her showCATALYST on KFAI radio and a print review in Pulse of the Twin Cities. (You may be able to find the radio interview archived for listening for a few weeks past it's broadcast on January 18.)

The opening was brisk and full of intense conversation. For most of us this was the first time that the war became personal. You leave the show feeling like you know Kari and her son Dylan. Do go to The Gallery linkto see the movie of the opening. The show runs through February 26. Call for an appointment.

Elsewhere around Minneapolis

Once again CROSSFIRES OF EXTINCTION by Margery Coffeyis the centerpiece of a show:When I Survey the Wonderous Cross: crosses from artists close to home and far away, on display at Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in their new art gallery. The inagural show of crosses was curated by "Yours Truly" using Margery's work, my collection of crosses and the pastor's collection of crosses. A work by Rev. Bohdan Kosicki, a piece like the certer panel of this larger piece, is part of the show as is work by Jane Rosemont and C. J Christofferson and many anonymous artists from around the world.

A READER'S ART 5
It is time to submit work to READER's ART 5. Submissions are due Feb 1.

Yes, amazingly, it IS the fifth year for this Spring show. It has moved to Minneapolis with me. This year the focus is on books that break out of the mould somewhat. The subtitle for the show is: on the wall and out of the box. I am calling for artists books that might bend the idea of book or stretch the string of narrative. Bound, unbound, sculptural, singular or editioned. Where does your notion of bookness lie today?

I have already commissioned a wall book from Seamus Leonard whose work backed up and unified the ALL THINGS ELECTORAL show. He has been working on an on-going series that is inspired by comics and political cartoons entitled the COSMIC STUFF UNIVERSE, painting directly on walls. This will be another chapter in the ongoing story. A movie of him at work can be found at the bottom of the Gallery page.

The call for Reader's Art 5 can be downloaded on the CALL FOR ART PAGE If you have problems downloading the pdf, contact me and I will send a text only copy to you.

At Long Last! The Journal Pages returns!

Too long ago to count, I accidently deleted the Journals page. It is now back, much adjusted. The journals and sketch books are mostly one of a kind, unique books made for heavy use. The pictures on the journal page are representative of the sorts in stock at any given time. If you are interested, contact me about specifics and I can send you pictures and prices of the books in hand. November 04 article
