Emily, copyright Susan Hensel EMILY A poet who chose to retire to her room rather than compromise her muse, wrote poetry so far in advance of her time that today, at the end of the twentieth century, they still sing with a fresh voice. After her death, her family found packets of poems, neatly sorted and tied with delicate string. This box contains evocative objects collected and created over a period of almost 2 years...objects that express the myth of Emily Dickinson Davey board, putty, paint, found objects. unique. Size 27"h $1200 SOLD
Anne, copyright Susan Hensel ANNE Anne Sexton and her words captured me as I investigated the relationship between women and creativity. She was an awful person impulsive, egocentric, infantile, dependent, promiscuous, abusive, ignorant of her own motivations. Yet, despite her self-proclaimed "madness," despite the illness that was most certainly the engine of her evil, she created often astounding poetry. She mined the unconscious, or, more accurately, her unconscious mined her, demanding to be heard in all its vernacular, vulgarity and metaphor. Her life is not to be admired. But the power of her words to stitch her life together, to keep her alive and to profoundly echo in the hearts of her readers is worthy of great admiration. Size 30"h. $1200 SOLD
Sylvia, copyright Susan Hensel SYLVIA An elegy to a poet who left early. Materials include a specially designed box with faux marble finish for Sylvia's only novel,The Bell Jar. This novel was a thinly veiled account of her life leading up to her first attempt to leave life. The box contained ashes, burnt fragments of her last poems from Ariel, roses, thorns, satin and a jar that defines her life in the most simple terms. unique $650
Sappho, copyright Susan Hensel SAPPHO A broken Doric column from which emerges the beautiful work of a much maligned and misunderstood poet. She was the first female poet, commanding great respect in ancient Greece. Parents would send their daughters to her as to a finishing school. It is only in more recent, more repressive times, that tales have been told that malign her personal life. Yet her poetry, fragments though they are, remain among the most beautiful ever written. Presented in a column build of binders board, handmade paper, and paint. unique. Size 12"h $250 SOLD
Kate, copyright Susan Hensel RETABLO FOR KATE A sculpture for D.H., for Kate and the Mexican Revolution. Handmade paper, binders board, lots of putty and paint, hundreds of authentic and fake mialgros. Size 27"h.$1200
A Reliquary for D.H., copyright Susan Hensel A RELIQUARY FOR D.H. D.H.Lawrence was a peculiar man of great intellectual vigor and creativity. HIs scandalous marriage to Frieda was tempestuous and rife with rituals of violence and reconciliation. He demanded great devotion from his friends, attempting to control and change them for their own improvement. He eventually became estranged from all of them. He was passionately devoted to his own ideas, but would abandon them in a flash. His contemporaries considered him brilliant, but ultimately impossible. While he wrote many banned pages about the importance of a freer, mystical, almost religious sexuality, he remained, at heart, a Puritan. He was apparently never able to achieve the peace and pleasure, the "mystical union" that he sought. Here stands a reliquary for his hopes. Size 19"h. $1200
