The Parable of Flight
Once upon a time there was a woman who had lost her arms to a catastrophe. She was
unable to care for herself, becoming totally dependent on the assistance
of others. She was unable to feed herself, dress herself or even to hug her
children. In despair, a chasm opened beneath her feet, plunging her into a
deep, clammy, smooth walled darkness.
She sat in the darkness,
gradually accommodating the paucity of light. She found that there were
handholds and foot holds for climbing the sheer walls of this well of
despond.
But she had no arms.
Her tears flowed over her cheeks
and onto her empty shoulders, soaking her skin in briny waters. Soon, she
noticed an itching in her shoulders, an annoyance she endured as she could
not scratch.
Her tears continued to flow and soon she began to grow wings from the
brine-soaked shoulders. Tiny little stumps, a whisper of a hope of a wing.
With time, her wings grew sturdy and strong and she was able to fly
upward and join the other fledglings
in flight.
